Formula 1 news story about [F1 2017 NEWS] ITALIAN GRAND PRIX: RACE REVIEW

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has dominated the Italian Grand Prix, leading from lights-to-flag for his 59th victory, his 39th from pole – to take back the lead in the championship for the first time this year.

The three-time Formula 1 World Champion cruised out front, with his teammate Valtteri Bottas moving up from fourth on the grid to second by lap four – after which he played rear-gunner, finishing 36-seconds ahead of a disappointed third-placed Sebastian Vettel, who never had the pace to challenge the Silver Arrows at Ferrari’s home race.

“Mercedes power is definitely better than Ferrari power, so it worked well this weekend,” Hamilton said on the podium, further upsetting the passionate Italian crowd who only have eyes for the Prancing Horse.

Hamilton heads to Singapore three-points ahead of Vettel, with the championship battle wide open as the sport leaves the European season behind for the final seven races.

Here’s how the 2017 FORMULA 1 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX played-out lap-by-lap:

Build Up:
A truly exciting dry race awaits us, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel leading the championship by seven points - but the German starting from sixth on the grid. And Hamilton, starting from pole position for the sixth time in Monza, his 69th time overall, finally passing Michael Schumacher for the all-time record. Starting on the front row is Williams’ Lance Stroll, who shone in the wet qualifying session yesterday - putting the team on the front row at Monza for the first time since 2004. The wet quail session saw more surprises with Force India’s Esteban Ocon starting from third. Will these two rookies get in the way of the Ferraris, with Kimi Raikkonen in P5 and Vettel P6.

There’s plenty of penalties: Alonso 35 places (starting 19th), Ricciardo 20 (starting 16th), Verstappen 20 (starting 13th), Sainz 10 (starting 15th), Hulkenberg 10 (starting 14th), Palmer 15 (starting 17th), Vandoorne 25 (starting 18th). Ricciardo was penalised a further 5 places for an unscheduled gearbox change. Perez and Grosjean were also penalised 5 places for unscheduled gearbox changes.

We’ve got a dry race today, after an extended wet qualifying session yesterday - delayed for two hours after heavy rain. We won’t have to wait today, but will the teams be on top of the tyres? Will we see some mistakes with wet weather limiting practice through the weekend? We’re expecting a one-stop race for everyone (fastest is stop lap 25, switch from supersofts to softs), so the emphasis will be on drivers to get a good start and make up some places - and then get past via the undercut.

Formation Lap:
Verstappen, Ricciardo, Palmer, Alonso are starting on softs, all the rest are on supersofts - so a longer first stint for those drivers, perhaps a few more laps than those on the supersofts, stopping Lap 28.

Lap 1:
Hamilton gets a great start, Stroll behind him - as Ocon moves up to P2. Raikkonen is side by side with Bottas. Perez has damage. Raikkonen gets ahead of Bottas into the second chicane. So it’s Hamilton, Ocon, Stroll, Raikkonen, Bottas, Vettel, Massa, Verstappen, Perez and Magnussen. Bottas gets Raikkonen for P4 into the parabolica. The two are side by side into the main straight, Bottas stays ahead.

Lap 2:
Vettel stays P6, into Lap 2 - will we see the Ferraris switch position to give the German a better chance to get ahead? Bottas tries to get past Stroll into the Ascari chicane, can’t make it stick. Grosjean’s front wing has been damaged.

Lap 3:

Replays show Vettel passes Raikkonen at the second chicane. Verstappen pits for new front wing, and he’s out on track. Verstappen and Massa incident under investigation.

Lap 5:
Replays show Raikkonen very careful through Turn 1, ensuring Bottas got a run on him out of the corner. Replays also show Ocon getting passed on the left down to Turn 1, impressive start. Bottas sets the fastest lap. Vettel has passed Stroll down on run down to Parabolica.

Lap 6:

He goes down the inside on Raikkonen into Turn 1 with a very bold move, no hesitation. The Australian goes up into P4. Ricciardo told Vettel ahead is slow, he can get him. Can he close down the German in the remaining laps?
