[F1 2018 VIDEO FEATURE] PIERRE GASLY: GETTING RESULTS

French talent Pierre Gasly continues to stand out at Red Bull B-team Toro Rosso, his performances to-date proving the underlying potential.

In Monaco, Gasly finished seventh from 10th on the grid. The 22-year-old getting through to Q3 in qualifying for the second time this year…

And while it wasn’t the most exciting race for the Frenchman – his fourth place in Bahrain far more impressive – yet another mature performance brought home six points, taking his total to 18 from the first six events.

Gasly said it was ‘pure joy’ to race in Monaco for the first time, but what’s driving his top-shelf performances is a champion’s ambition.

F1 DRIVER, T0ORO ROSSO:
“I try to do the best [job] all the time. I always try to train harder, to always give more and do the best I can. But, of course, I’m not in Formula 1 to be happy with 15th place, or 12th place. I want to be at the top, so I will try everything I can to be there.”

Gasly’s rise comes at a time when more experienced teammate Brendon Hartley is struggling, the New Zealander a former Red Bull reserve driver, and a two-time world endurance champion and Le Mans winner.

Hartley outqualified Gasly in two of the first three Grands Prix and scored a point in Azerbaijan – but Gasly has finished ahead of him in three of the four races he’s finished, earning points on two occasions.

And while the rookie may not have the hype of Charles Leclerc or Esteban Ocon before him, Gasly knows it’s performance that counts.

F1 DRIVER, TORO ROSSO:
“I always believe that as long as you work really hard, at some point it has to pay off.”

And Gasly knows what hard work is all about. After winning the 2016 GP2 title, he stayed razor-sharp: racing in Japan’s Super Formula, dovetailing that with his role as Red Bull reserve driver and time in the team’s simulator, making for a very busy 2017.

F1 DRIVER, TORO ROSSO:
“Yeah we do a lot of simulator work of course, because limited track time, so we need to be ready straight on the first lap in for practice.”

Regardless, Gasly is now delivering in F1, and with his star on the rise – expect him to make the move beyond Toro Rosso in the coming years.
