[F1 2019 VIDEO FEATURE] PIERRE GASLY: MATCHING MAX

Pierre Gasly is taking some time to come up to speed at Red Bull Racing, with the Frenchman yet to match his highly rated teammate Max Verstappen.

A point for fastest lap at the last race in China a highlight but one earned after a late pit stop for the soft tyres…

Across the first three events, Verstappen delivered the full potential of the RB15 – with a podium in Australia, followed by two fourth places. Gasly’s best a sixth place in Shanghai…

… and while the progression is clear, Red Bull is infamously impatient in terms of results. Its long-held mantra, deliver or be dropped.

But Gasly has delivered at every level so far.

He began in French Formula 4 in 2011, and won the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in 2013. He was runner-up in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2014, then joined GP2, now Formula 2 – winning the crown in 2016.

At Toro Rosso in F1, he shaded Brendon Hartley in his first full campaign, with standout results - like fourth in Bahrain, seventh in Monaco and sixth in Hungary… part of five point scores last year.

And he came into the 2019 season with top team Red Bull Racing in the right way, upping his game in pre-season training.

F1 DRIVER, RED BULL RACING:
“We went to the US, [the] beginning of 2019, to the Red Bull training centre in Santa Monica. Yeah, just to really focus on the preparation. And I just wanted to be disconnected from everything in Europe.”

And he now needs to focus on closing the gap to Verstappen – something even former Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo struggled with.

It’s a huge mountain to climb, but Gasly knows he must reach the summit – and fast – if he’s to move forward with achieving his goal.

F1 DRIVER, RED BULL RACING:
“End of the day, my target in Formula 1 is to be [a] World Champion. And, of course, to be [an F1] World Champion, you need to beat the best drivers on the grid. And to be fair at the moment I think he’s [Max Verstappen] probably the most talented guy out there.”
