[F1 2019 VIDEO FEATURE] RED BULL RACING: A NEW LINE-UP

It’ll be all eyes on Red Bull Racing next week at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as the squad finally hits the track powered by Honda.

The new power unit partnership has been more than a year in the works, with sister squad Toro Rosso doing the hard yards in development.

And while both sides are brimming with excitement over the performance potential, the pressure is on to deliver – both for the brand and the sport.

"They have to become a championship contender again," said F1’s managing director of motorsports, Ross Brawn.

To ensure that it doesn’t repeat McLaren’s nightmare three-season stint with Honda, Red Bull has just asked the Japanese manufacturer to build the most powerful engine possible rather than force it into a set space.

… with chief technical officer Adrian Newey having visited Honda Japan’s Development centre in Sakura, last December.

The Brit the most successful F1 designer of all time, 10 world title-winning cars to his name – most recently with the Red Bull brand in 2013.

Behind the wheel, the squad’s new line-up of Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly has already gotten together for ice karting in the Netherlands…

F1 DRIVER, RED BULL RACING:
“I’m very excited to just get started again with the new car, [and] new engine [power unit] and see how it’s all going to work together and I think everybody is very motivated and they really want to go for a good result this year.”

But Gasly, a former GP2 champion and Toro Rosso driver of 26 GPs, has been given the promotion earlier than Red Bull would have liked.

… given Daniel Ricciardo’s defection to Renault.

Setting up Verstappen to lead early on, while Gasly gets up to speed – which will be no mean feat, says Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.

“It is not going to be easy,” he said. “Of course it’s not. But he knows what is expected of him.”

Gasly, though, is an ambitious talent, capable of standout results like Bahrain last year, and knows he now has the top drive to go with it.

SOUNDBITE (English) PIERRE GASLY,
F1 DRIVER, RED BULL RACING:
“Now I’m starting this new chapter, and I really want to make the best out of it. I have a team that won already four world championships, with amazing people. I have an amazing teammate as well, superfast, probably the most talented guy on the grid at the moment. So for me to develop for my second year in Formula 1 is the best place to be.”

Two strong drivers who are keen to face off, and a more powerful engine, make Red Bull Racing the one to watch in 2019.
