[F1 2019 VIDEO FEATURE] RENAULT F1 TEAM: MORE WORK NEEDED

Renault proved in Melbourne it has a long way to go to be F1’s best of the rest, with Haas a cut above at Albert Park, meaning there’s more homework ahead…

… if the French marque wants to own the coveted place between the top teams and super-competitive midfield across a full season.

And while Nico Hulkenberg was seventh, it was a nightmare retirement for new recruit Daniel Ricciardo, who still remains upbeat about his new ride.

SOUNDBITE (English) DANIEL RICCIARDO,
F1 DRIVER, RENAULT:
“I think, back in Belgium [August 2018] when the decision had just been made, I was a bit - I guess, I don't know if apprehensive is the word of 'how is everyone going to be like looking at me, treating me, is it going to be weird with Red Bull?' So, yeah, I guess there was bit of apprehension about it, but it was fine, it was all good.”

After just one round Hülkenberg leads the way in terms of results, having out-qualified Ricciardo by eight one thousandths of a second at Albert Park, he also has six points freshly banked.

And that is going to be the battle to watch, with Hülkenberg underrated in this fight and able to inflict career damage, with nothing to lose.

SOUNDBITE (English) DANIEL RICCIARDO,
F1 DRIVER, RENAULT:
“A lot of people look at his [racing] resume and it's like [he has] ‘no podium in F1’, but people that have raced against him know that he’s definitely a podium-worthy racer at the very least. So I'm not looking at the stats.”

Their battle on-track though pales in comparison to their fight for constant upgrades for added performance, and on this Renault has said it will be mixing up the schedule to offset it against its rivals.

…all completed as its facilities expand at both at its race team base in Enstone, England and at its power unit HQ in Viry-Châtillon near Paris.

Meaning it’s time to focus as Renault rushes towards its ultimate goal.

SOUNDBITE (English) CYRIL ABITEBOUL,
MANAGING DIRECTOR, RENAULT SPORT RACING:
After three years of transformation, of regeneration, of the team, we are now ready to challenge what will be the top teams. It’s going to take a while, but those teams should be within our reach very soon now.”
