[F1 2019 VIDEO FEATURE] WILLIAMS RACING: BATTLING ON

Williams launched to fanfare, but was under fire at the start of pre-season testing, after failing to run across the first two days of the opening week.

It was more painful news, after Williams’ dire 2018 season, when it finished last in the standings for yet another embarrassing reminder of just how bad things have been.

SOUNDBITE (English) CLAIRE WILLIAMS,
DEPUTY TEAM PRINCIPAL, WILLIAMS:
“Finding yourself in P10 in the championship clearly indicates that you’ve probably got some key issues at play and some key areas of weakness, and for us it’s very much a journey.”

And the squad is desperate to prove that it’s not down for the count, having made sweeping changes at Grove to re-energise its workforce.

SOUNDBITE (English) CLAIRE WILLIAMS,
DEPUTY TEAM PRINCIPAL, WILLIAMS:
“We want to tell the world that Williams is here to stay, that we’re viable, we’re sustainable and we have clear ambitions for success in the future.”

Incredibly, its new title sponsor ROKiT has a history with the team, the brand’s co-founder Jonathan Kendrick, previously working as Alan Jones’ tyre engineer in 1978. And the Brit highly rates the job the squad is doing from the top down.

SOUNDBITE (English) JONATHAN KENDRICK,
CO-FOUNDER, ROKIT:
“I really respect Claire [Williams], she’s one of the reasons that I did this with them. Because, I bought into her philosophy, her devotion, her strategy and her drive. So I’m really excited about it.”

But, with Monday and Tuesday wiped out, Williams’ workload had to be compacted into Thursday and Friday, with George Russell and Robert Kubica each getting just a morning and afternoon session.

And there could be more pain still to come for chief technical officer Paddy Lowe, should the new FW42’s performance not be up to scratch…

… with the real test just ahead in Australia.

SOUNDBITE (English) PADDY LOWE,
CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER, WILLIAMS:
“Finally, you get to the hour of qualifying in Australia, where you really find out how did you do, where are you in the exam? That is the exam, that hour.”
